Lars Anderson founded BlueDot Strategies with the hope of helping organizations tell their unique stories through a hands-on approach and personalized attention. He is a longtime communications professional with an extensive background in crisis, strategic, political, and international communications. Lars has worked with elected officials, multiple leading agencies of the U.S. Government, and a wide variety of corporate and nonprofit clients. Lars held several senior-level appointments in the Obama Administration, most recently as the deputy chief of staff and counselor to the administrator at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Lars worked directly with Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter to navigate his first 100 days as secretary, and he advised him on key public affairs issues, including military operations, diplomatic initiatives, and military engagements around the world. As the director of public affairs at FEMA, Lars led the U.S. Government rapid response efforts around public information and engagement initiatives on numerous disasters, including the successful response to Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
As the press director and spokesman for USAID, Lars directed press engagement strategy and managed relationships with regional, national, and international press to accurately and energetically tell the USAID story. He has led teams of media professionals, in government and in the corporate sector, to successfully execute media outreach through op-ed development and placement, daily media monitoring, and rapid-fire issues management.
Lars has lived in Beirut, Lebanon, and he has also served in the United States Air Force and was the NATO spokesman in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, during a period of heightened tension. On Capitol Hill, he served for three years as the communications director for U.S. Representative Adam Smith.
Lars earned a master’s degree from George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and a Bachelor of Science from the United States Air Force Academy. Lars has also participated in Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior Executives in National and International Security program. Lars is active in engaging other entrepreneurs to navigate the business world and volunteers with veteran-service organizations.
